Growing Vegetables In Your Organic Garden With The Right Fertilization

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

For effective gardening of vegetables in your organic gardening, you must first think about fertilization. This is almost always attributable to mulching. But there are other things to consider as well, such as the introduction of fertilizers that are available to you both naturally or commercially. To simply define this, it means to place materials, wether they be inorganic or organic in your garden around your plants.

By doing this you will also provide fertilization, it also helps to protect your soil as well. If you garden receives a lot of heavy rain, or is susceptible to high weed growth causing it to be a weed trap, then mulches will provide some much protection from this and much needed supplementation that will aid the natural growth process of your organic garden vegetables.

Beside this, you will also find it will help to regulate the temperature of your soil. Also the added bonus of gardening this way is the aesthetic look this lends to your garden and the improved ground texture. By spreading the mulch to areas not planted will also help to keep any weeds under control.

If you do decide to establish mulches in your garden, you will find that you need to water less often. This is because it help your plants retain water. Also your plants will have far better growth levels because of this added water retention. It will also help you with your weed control, but it will never stop them completely stop them.

You should always test your soil, this way you can maximise your fertilization efforts. Never buy your fertilizer in bulk before doing a test on your soil, this way you make sure you get the correct fertilizer suited for your soil type. Just what could be a worse experience, than having not tested and then having bought in bulk to find that it is of no use to you.

When you do apply your fertilizer, it is recommended that you should maintain it.  Always go for a high quality fertilizer, this in an absolute must do for any gardener, especially if you are a beginner. There are also many fertilizers available to you, that are tailored solely to the beginning of your planting experience. These will require no extra maintenance through your gardening activities. In any rate, make sure that you are getting your money’s worth and have thoroughly proven for yourself that the given fertilizer you are putting on your garden has been tried and tested on your soil type.

Organic material is always the best source of fertilization for your plants, this is because it adheres closely to natures natural growth process. Always try to avoid introducing any chemicals in to your soil, this is so that your plants will get used to growing and maximizing there potential via natural means. Going organic has many added health benefits for you and your family and by growing green you are doing your bit to help the environment. So why not go ahead now and grow organic?

Beading Ideas for Fun Beading Projects

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Beading is a excellent way to do something creative yourself and spend fun time with your kids. And some beading projects are very easy. You can easily make your own beaded necklace, bracelet or earrings. Here are several tips for easy beading for beginner beaders that will help you avoid common mistakes and make your beading projects easier and more fun.

1 Put space between your beads

Some types of beads especially semi-precious, Swarovski, glass and pearl beads require a spacer between them. There are two ways to do so - make a simple knot between your beads, or insert a decorative spacer. I prefer spacers, because they make the design more interesting. It is best to use silver or gold spacers with expensive beads – they won’t loose the shine as they age.

2 A beading layout board will keep all your beads from running all over the place

Before starting your project lay your beads out on a jewelry layout board. You can buy these boards in any shop that sells, craft supplies, beads and beading tools. The board lets you see, how your design will work before you connect everything. If you don’t have a board, use a plain light bath towel, so your beads don’t scatter.

3 How to keep your beads on the table

Even if you use a beading board, it is a good idea to cover the table you work on with a towel. Beads rolling all over the table can drive you crazy, but put a towel under your beads and they can’t escape. Also, if you have a cat, cover your work with another towel, if you leave even for a few minutes. My cat can destroy hours of work in less then 30 seconds.

4 Be generous when cutting your beading string

If you are going to use knots, then cut the string 4 times longer than finished project plus a few extra inches, otherwise 2 times longer. Also you can fold your string twice or even four times, to make it stronger. This is particularly true if you use heavy glass beads and large beads.

5 Match string color to the colors of your beading project

Your don’t always have to use white string, buy a string that matches the color of your beads for this project. If you can’t find a string in that particular shade, take a white one and dye it, any permanent marker would do the job.

6 Be careful – strings stretch

In my first beaded necklaces I always had this problem – you finish a necklace, than after a day of wearing it the string stretches and beads are no longer tight together, looks awful. To avoid this, after all the beads are on, hang your necklace for a day or so, than do the final knotting or attach clasps.

7 Be careful, when hiding the ends of your work

Final knots are important, it is best to use square knots and tighten them firmly. Then apply some jewelers glue to your knots and only after that cut the loose ends

8 Strong lamp is a must have for beading

Beading for several hours can give you a bad eye strain, especially if you are working with seed beads. So always have a good light on, a desk lamp is best. A tool that can also make your work easy is a magnifying glass for beading. It will also help keep your project neat and help to avoid small mistakes.

Day Care Centers: Things to Look For

Finding a Daycare Center

Before you search a daycare center for your child, check out several centers and do some extensive research and check their references. Daycare facilities range from wonderful to awful. You want to choose a center where you child can have fun, is safe and can develop as a person and develop a variety of skills.

Look for a daycare facility that provides activities such as dancing, storytelling and group singing sessions as well as providing creative projects. Daycare centers also provide an opportunity for children to socialize with other children.

Daycare Center Concerns

Typically at a daycare facility there is not enough staff for your child to receive the substantial amount of personal attention they would receive if they stayed at home with a babysitter. The risk of your child acquiring a cold or the flu or other communicable illnesses really increases. Some daycare facilities will not allow your child to stay at the facility if they notice your child is sick and you might have a difficult time finding a competent babysitter on short notice.

How to Select a Great Daycare Center

For convenience it is recommended that you try to find a quality center that is near your home or work. You have to decide if you want to place your child in a daycare facility that offers a small group environment or a center that had a large group of children.

It is very important to check with friends, your pediatrician and people you work with in order to get referrals for quality centers. Ask the managers of the centers that you are considering if they are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children or if they are accredited by the National Association of Family Childcare.

Ask the facility manager for information pertaining to the experience of the teachers, the food items they serve for lunch, the ratio of children to teacher. Find out if they offer a variety of activities and if they are flexible enough to meet your needs such as being a little late once in a while to pick up your child.

When you visit the daycare center which you are considering for your child make sure it is clean. See if the children enjoy interacting with the staff, find out if it will be warm during the cold months and check to see if the kids at the facility are having a good time.

Check to see if they have furniture designed for safety for children and if the furniture is in good condition. It is advisable to visit the daycare centers when the parents will be there since this will provide you an opportunity to talk to them and find out if they are pleased with the center or are their kids primarily there due to the convenience of the location of the facility.

Take your child to the daycare center and see if he enjoys being with the staff as well as the children. Make sure the center has a license for operating a daycare facility from the city services department. Doing extensive research will improve the chances that you select a quality daycare center for your child.

The best way to grow tomatoes in containers and pots

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

I decided to have a go at growing tomatoes in pots this year and have been very pleased with them. I always grow tomatoes in my garden plot but added pots this year. Over thirty years I have succesfully grown tomatoes in my garden plot. But growing my tomatoes in containers is anew departure for me.

The comparison between the pot grown tomato and those in the ground.

I grew 2 varieties this year moneymaker and an Italian cherry tomato variety. I cannot remember the name but they came free with a magazine. I sowed the seeds in March 2008 and grew them on in my conservatory in 6 inch pots. There were far to many plants for me alone so I gave away the surplus. I planted them out as 2 – 3 foot high plants in early June and a month later picked the first tomatoes. As I speak in late august I still have many fruits to pick so it has been a good year. There were a few differences with the pot grown tomatoes that are worth mentioning.

Firstly the moneymaker tomatoes were slightly smaller than the ones grown on my plot.

Secondly there were not quite as many cherry tomatoes in the containers.

Other than that the results were very similar. The taste of your own tomatoes is fantastic and you will never eat better. For the container grown tomatoes

I did treat them differently and with a bit more care.

  1. Make sure you put tomato plants in a really big pot.

I like the root systems to have plenty of room and not become pot bound. Your tomatoes need a big pot of at least 10 inches in diameter to have enough room for the roots. I used standard clay flower pots as I like the look of them but just use any large containers you have.

  1. Water your tomatoes even if it rains.

We have had a dreadful summer in the UK this year and it has rained constantly. I still found that the pot grown tomato plants were wilting a bit if I didn’t check them for watering. The plants grown in the ground do not need this. The reason for this is that the leaves of the tomato plants deflect much of the water away from the pot. Not all the water gets through to the plant roots. This is why I check them daily.

  1. Be ruthless with pinching out side shoots on the tomato plants.

I only pinch out once or twice a season when growing tomatoes in the ground because they seem to do fine. I have learned this through trial and error. The moneymaker tomato plants in the pots were regularly pinched out throughout the season to make sure that I had a good large crop. With cherry tomatoes there is no need to pinch them out as they provide plenty of fruit naturally. They take care of themselves and always give plenty of harvest.

  1. Remove excess foliage once you have the tomato fruits.

I have always done this to tomatoes and do not know where I picked this tip up. Once you have all the tomatoes set on the plant remove any leaves that are hiding the fruit from the sun. Some people pick their tomatoes when green and ripen them under glass but I like them to ripen on the vine. Taking the leaves away will let the tomatoes grow a bit larger.

If you have missed this tomato season then I encourage you to plan ahead for your tomato growing in 2009. Grow some in pots and containers as well as in the ground. This can be great therapy for you after a busy day and can be done in any sunny spot.
